My PC sent me an email - security check

Im running Mandriva 2007 free download addition. Ive been up and running for about 3months. Out of the blue today the PC sent me an email from root. The title was security check issues.

Im abit puzzled as to why it did this? Its telling me about "world writable files" and a load of other checks its done and things it didnt find!

Theres so much of it I dont know where to begin or even if I need too?

Is this a standard quarterly proceedure thatmy pc will carry out????

I would assume that there is some sort of script timed to go off at regular intervals to check for potential security issues. It's not something to be afraid of, just either 1) try to fix the issues [if you understand them] or 2) just ignore it.

Third way - ask in forums. It said your computer has some files, that are rather important for computer configuration and should normally be writable only by root (so you from your ordinary account don't have a chance to modify it by mistake - you are much more accurate as root, aren't you? - and some security bug in user-run programs also do not expose these files to risk). But they are writable by any user account on your box. That is not as secure as the notification system would like. So you can look at list of files and decide if they are 1) important enough to be only root-writable 2) are changed often enough to be user-writable 3) should exist at all.
