could be that the installation ran successfully. It would be helpful if you mention which distribution and version you installed. Otherwise we do not know whcih tools are available for you.

If you want us to help you, you will have to give us a lot more information about your problem. Start by telling us which variety of Linux you are trying to install. Then tell us the steps you went through. Are you installing from a CD or a USB drive? Did you check the md5sum of your downloaded image before you copied it? Sometimes an image can get corrupted during the download.

At what point did the installation go down? If you can't remember, it won't hurt to just repeat the whole process, this time noting down the steps that succeeded and the one that fails. Most installers tell you what they are doing at each step.

On that shell type this: You shall run X as root. Just be careful.

We don't even know yet if X has installed successfully; startx only works in a fully installed system. The root prompt he's getting could be in an partially installed system (in which case he could probably complete the installation by hand with a bit of guidance) or he could still be in the live system on the installation disc. We don't even know the distro, so we certainly don't know anything about the installer.

If we could just a get a little more information about the problem, we could all give better advice.

Welcome to the forums. As others have stated, the distribution you are running will be helpful to know. There's a chance that startx may run the X server and give you a desktop, there's a chance that this will not occur. Firstly if you type it and it gives you more confusing information, then it was that "chance it will not occur" case, and thus going down that path trying to unravel that problem is probably not the best path. However if it does run the XServer and start a desktop, the questions you should be addressing are (1) will you need to do this at every boot? (2) is this normal or has there been a problem with your install where it's not completely correct? And merely ignoring those questions may not serve you long term.

Yes we all know, and that it was not enough.

Yet that will do no harm to try one slim chance of feeling successful, which may encourage a beginner who can even hardly frame up a reasonable question.

Any way, pardon me if it was a mistake giving such candid advice.
