Unhappy my modem is busy...what's it doing???

I just installed Mandrake 8.1 distro and I'm trying to connect to ATT Worldnet using kppp. I have everything entered correctly, but when I go to connect, it says that my modem is busy. Can anyone think of a reason it might be busy, keeping in mind that I know its not in use (at least to my knowledge)? Help please!!

I've spent the past two weeks going through what you're going through so here's what I think I've learned:
1: Your modem is not busy, Linux is trying to access it through the wrong port. If your modem is on com2 under windows (as mine was) then in Linux it is ttsy1. Likewise if it's com1 it's ttsy0 etc.
2: If it's an internal modem on a fairly new pc <3yo then it's probably what's called a winmodem which won't work too easily with Linux. You either need to find a linux driver for it and go through a whole heap of shit you probably don't want to if you are a newbie like myself to install it. OR if you're lucky you might find a binary driver for your modem and kernel that will install itself (like I did, phew!). Either look back through the replies to my posts for links or do a search for "linmodems"

Hope this helps, keep us posted.
