My Linux Hangs!!!

Hello geeks,

Iam using a fedora core 1 kernel version 2.4.22-1.2115.nptl along with windows XP . My system specs - AMD 2400 + and 256 Mb RAM + geforce 4 MX 128 MB .

Well, this is really annoying . I thought Linux is so stable and works unlike windows, but my linux version often hangs , like when i try to play tux racer, or when iam watchin a movie in mplayer, sometimes @ the splash screen .

The system hangs and no key combinations in my Keyboard works, and i have to push the restart button .

This is not what I expected from linux systems.

PLease help me to maintain a stable system.

what do you expect?

I just wonder what you expect? Hear you are using a distro that is known to be a red hat testing distro for implementing items into there enterprise addition. So in all due respect expect some flaws and bugs as the development goes on. You want the true stable things you have heard about linux, get a tried and trued distro like slack or debian. That is the problem when you let a system be a Guinea pig. There is nothing wrong with linux, runs in schools,as servers,in goverment and all sorts of places. The problem with video in games may be the open gl driver, is it installed? You would get more help if you would come in here with a open mind and not bash the stability of linux.

My 2 cents!

Like anti_microsoft (I like the name) said, first try a stable version of a known to be stable distro before you start drawing conclusions. If your computer still hangs with such a version my guess is that it's either a buggy driver or a hardware problem.

Well , thanks guys. Lemme check out the drivers.

and btw I liked linux the moment it got installed !

let's no pretend that people don't have issues with slackware. You can bash redhat/fedora all day but I have had not had any probelms with fedora. Look at the package selections. Fedora (and mandrake, suse. all the big players and the small ones for that matter) and slackware have the same packages selection. How things work and fit together under the covers is different but hey, fc1 is not even supported any longer.

Upgrade to FC2. It works great for me.

Justin, all the "big players" as you call them have their
own, modified kernels, with 3rd party add-ins of all sorts.

You may be right about them all using the same packages
(not necessarily all using the same version or not having
compiled them against the same glibc and probably not
using the same version of gcc), but the thing that mostly
determines the stability of a working system is the kernel ...

I do agree that he should upgrade his little red riding hood,
though ;)

Cheers,
Tink

I love my slackware true and well, but this was uncalled
for. FC is no more of a mine-field or testing ground than
your Slack-current is.

Mate, if the box hangs in early stages like on the boot-splash
I'd be sure to check my BIOS settings, have a close look at
my timings and maybe run memtest against the box. If tuxracer
is your primary problem I'd suspect the nVidia binary drivers,
they don't necessarily play nicely with all possible kernels
(I for example couldn't for the life of me compile 1.0-6111
against a 2.6.8.1 or 2.6.9 kernel, while 1.0-6106 worked fine
with both ... )

Cheers, and happy bug hunting,
Tink

I have to say in no way was I trying to bash fedora. Simply put there are several posts on this site about it being in constant testing and therefore implies it may have bugs/flaws in the design. I would never bash linux, we here at LQ are fighting for the same thing. I just think that if someone wants to come on here and have an issue with stability with such a system why not try a distro that has been around and bugs are few and far between? Not saying that slack does not have its problems but I seem to find them far and few between. I do say I am sorry if I did in fact offend anyone but that was not my point. I still do stick to my philosophy that I did express in my first post, but wish it not to be seen as bashing for that was not what for it was intended.

My 2 cents!
