My laptop quit online, then worked for a couple days, then quits again

Last year I hated Windows so much that I changed the laptop to VectorLinux 5.8. It worked great until it lost connection with Road Runner for quite a while. After a complete power lost it worked for 2 days, then out again. I tried unhooking all computer power, even with my wife's XP desktop.

Dell Inspiron B130
Netgear CG814WG v2
VectorLinux 5.8 SOHO

Connection details- desktop

00-40-2B-35-D5-24

IP address 192.168.0.10
SubnetMask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.0.1
DHCP server 192.168.0.1
DNS servers 24.92.226.40
24.92.226.41

This may be my last try to fix this. I try to get help from Roadrunner, but only help with Windows or Mac.

Can you ping yoru DNS servers? I can from my system, so I know your ISP is alive...

Can you access the setup panel in your router? If you can not connect to your ISP, then don't tell them you have a linux box. It doesn't matter, other than their drones only have windbloze questions to ask. I sometimes get this crap from my ISP. Last time I just took a windoze box, and played the game. Finally they found their problem. That is the way it is. Nothing wrong with your config...

I forgot something

Forgetting things is my specialty. Brain surgery does it very well.

My KWifi Manager shows -

Connected to network: frontierB18A

Access point: 00:18:D1:90:B1:Bf

Local IP: 192.168.254.1

This is not Roadrunner (192.168.0.10)

I have tried to get it to work but it will only work with Frontier. (local friend). Firefox and Seamonkey try "look up" but doesn't work.

Are you saying
Quote:

Local IP: 192.168.254.1
is the routers IP ? If it is, this isn't going to work with your system set to 192.168.0.10.

tootmich 08-14-2008 10:43 PM

I've tried that but my KWiFi says:

Out of range
Signal strength: 0

Access point: -no access point-
Local IP: 192.168.0.10
Frequency (channel) ?[0]
Encryption: off

farslayer 08-14-2008 10:48 PM

iwlist <interface> scanning

are you sure a neighbors Wireless access point isn't stepping on yours ?

tootmich 08-15-2008 11:54 AM

Here's this:

"eth1 Interface doesn't support scanning"

Should I toss the laptop into our pond?

The only Frontier signal I see is that of a friend. The odd thing is that he lives over 100 yards away.

Could this have taken over my computer, or is it possible that my own signal is dead? Our Netgear unit is looking OK.
