If the kernel can't see it you can't mount it ... what's the make and
model, does it have a HDD in it?

Cheers,
Tink

Does the drive require power supply? Is it known working?

Are you using a usb hub?

It is a 3.5in Silver eSATA USB 2.0 to IDE SATA External Hard Drive Enclosure, model UNI3510U2E and there is a HDD in it. It has a power supply, it's brand new, but I don't know if it works at all though it powers on, and I'm not using a usb hub.

The enclosure should be transparent; that's what happened when I put an old IDE drive in a USB enclosure.

What should show up in lsusb or dmesg is the hard drive that's inside it. Is the hard drive powered up and known to be good?

Edit: I apologize for the duplicate--if I figure out what I did wrong, I won't do it again.

I'd plug it into another system to see if anything can see it.

What kind of drive did you put in it? Unless you are using esata the thing is suppose to simply work linux 2.4.x+.

Recheck your owners manual. http://us.startech.com/media/product...UNI3510U2E.pdf

"eSATA interface is only usable if using with a SATA drive."

It was that HDD. I tried a different one and it worked.
