My Duel boot went bad
HI,
I was installing Ubuntu as duel boot with Windows XP using a unetbootin. Part of the way through, as it was installing Ubuntu, it froze up on me and now my laptop just says, "No operating system installed" I'm pretty sure that means I messed up my master boot record, but I don't have a working CD drive (the reason I was using unetbootin in the first place) Is there anything I can put on a usb drive that will fix that? Actually any way of fixing while still keeping XP installed would be appreciated:) Oh yeah, I can still hook the drive up as an external drive to another computer, but it shows my windows files. But only the windows partition. |
if u can boot DOS from usb etc then u can fix yr MBR by running fixmbr command. but u can use it only in XP recovery mode... check this link for detail
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d....mspx?mfr=true But u have to manage one thing be able to boot from a floffy or usb but hummmm u dnt have CD ROM drive then how would u enter xp recovery console? anyway try some search on intenet goodluck |
You can make bootable usb thumbdrive : http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm and fix your windows' bootloader. If unetbootin fails, try some other like Wubi. All the best :)

Thanks!
Through one of the links on bootdisk.com I was able to find a way to do a quick fix. I installed install-mrb on another linux machine, and then hooked up my hard drive through a usb and did the install-mrb on it, and it is booting up...It boots up with MRB 2FA, but by selecting A, I am able to get it to show 1234F, selecting 1 gives me WIN XP. I'll figure out installing on the other parts later. Thanks again.

Yes, i suggest it in case unetbootin doesnt work on his machine. Obviously, use it after fixing windows' mbr. ;)
