MX19.2 cannot find wifi on Toshiba a665 series laptop
I have installed MX19.2 xfce on an old Toshiba a665-s5170 Satellite laptop and cannot pick up the wifi signal. Apparently this model of laptop can switch the wifi off for various reasons (as in a new install of linux in place of windows). I have seen how to reset this switch in Windows. The wifi card was working before with a slow Windows 8.1 system. The card (Intel Centrino Advanced-N + WiMax 6250)and driver is evident in the system info check so I think the card is ok, just not switched on. How do I switch this wifi card back on in MX-19.2?

GHM,
Welcome to LQ forums. This is a two-stage process. First, press the Wireless Antenna ON/OFF button located on the System Indicator Panel (top row of keyboard, above the F8 key). Next, once the Wireless Antenna is ON, you can use the (Fn + F8) combination of keys to turn the wireless on. https://support.dynabook.com/support...tentId=2782704 If that does not work, open a Terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T), give the following command, press Enter and let us know the output. Code:

Thank you for the kind and generous answer. I got this old laptop from my sister last week and thought I might recycle it. Only have to be smarter than a button in this case. The hardware was looking at me but I wasn't looking at it. I anticipate learning more from LQ forums' members. Already I have gained much just by searching topics. Thanks again from an old fossil who is trying to learn new things. |
GHM,
Yes, Linux is really useful on the recycling front. I was recently given three surplus HP 250 G2s which are now running Linux Mint 20 MATE instead of Windows 8.1. I plan to donate these to a local digital inclusion project. I wish you well with MX Linux on your Toshiba. |
