mutt problem

mutt always tries to open /var/mail/alex (alex being my username) when it starts up, whatever mailboxes options i give it in my ~/.muttrc, but my mailbox is in /var/spool/mail/alex. (i know i should set up something like procmail to take messages from /var/spool/mail/alex and put them into mailboxes in /home/alex/Mail eventually, but I'm just testing the basic setup at the moment).

i recompiled mutt with the --with-mailpath /var/spool/mail configure option, but it still has the same problem. i'm guessing this is due to me doing something stupid, anyone got any ideas?
