Hello everyone,
I'm new to Linux so to speak, and have this year finally successfully got a distro to install onto a computer without problems, and toyed around with it for a little while, and then bought a pocket guide book from O'Rielly which was based on the Fedora Core, not the Mandrake 10.0 Official Release that I had installed. So in thought, I wondered if it was possible to install Fedora Core 3 on another partition (10GB) on the same Hard Drive as my Windows XP Pro, and have Mandrake 10.0 Official Release installed on an older 8GB HD on the slave/primaryIDE. Not sure what is needed to solve the problem I am having so I'll post everything here...
Problem/Question:
At any one time after a format/re-installation, either Fedora Core 3 will work, or Mandrake Linux 10.0 will work, and Windows XP always works. I can't get the LILO/GRUB screen to have it where I can boot into Mandrake Linux, if I want, Reboot and go into Fedora Core 3 if I want,.. its either Windows XP and Fedora Core 3, or if I formatted everything and tried installing all 3 again, it'll be Windows XP and Mandrake Linux.
In the GRUB/LILO, the other Linux distro never shows up... just whatever Linux distro I installed last. I have found a thread here in the forums that explained how to alter the LILO, to add the other distro, however I dont understand the text I see there to get it to work right. I tried to copy the text from the working Linux boot line, and alter it to try to boot the other when I select it and it doesn't work...
Is it insane to try to load two different distro's on the same computer? I wanted Mandrake because it detects everything in the system and seems to work well and runs pretty smoothly, but Fedora Core x is in all the manuals I seem to see at book stores, and the pocket guide I purchased, but FC3 doesn't detect or work with my sound card, and seems to run a little slower.
System Layout:
AMD Duron 1.6GHz
256MB DDR 266MHz RAM
Primary Master: 30GB HDD (Windows XP 20GB/Fedora Core 3 10GB)
Primary Slave: 8GB (Mandrake Linux 10.0 Official Release)
Secondary Master: 32x CD-ROM
Sound Card: Built in VIA AC'97
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 7000 32MB
Any help/suggestions is greatly appreciated! I've been trying to force both to work for the last week, I could just be missing something obvious to someone else but not to me, or I am doing the most illogical setup ever and just haven't realized it yet. Thanks!
