multiple desktops
This is really a first-timer question: What is the point of the multiple desktops?

Is it simply to have more applications open at the same time or is there a specific purpose to it?
Can I for example, run KDE on one desktop and Gnome on the other?

I hate working across multiple desktops - but I have set up two, because there is one case where it makes sense: When you're using the Gimp.
The Gimp opens a multizillion smaller program windows at the same time. And if you need to open other programs at the same time, it is a bloody mess. When I use Gimp, it gets a desktop to itself.
