Multi Media Player Wanted!
 

okay here is a highly debated question? which is the best all round multi media player for a linux user and where/how do I get it?

I personally like XMMS for its simplicity and due to the fact that I mostly organise my files on my own based on directory etc. XMMS is heavily based on WinAmp for Windows.

While I've never used it, I've heard that Amarok is very good and much more fully featured, including a library to keep track of your music, etc.

If you're looking for a player that will play just about anything, then I would suggest Mplayer which I have found very reliable for both music and video (once configured!). I believe it comes with GUI but it is still regarded as a command line player so you have been warned! Google around for some screenshots and reviews or just download them and try them out!

Which distribution are you using? Most distributions now include a package manager that will connect to the internet and download the program you're after automatically.

I like Xmms and Mplayer.

If you use KDE, then kaffeine is the best all around media player. On Debian Etch, I use Kaffeine for all music and videos. In particular, it handles soft-subtitles, which I haven't had luck with on other media players.

If you use kaffeine, be sure to get the w32 codecs from mplayer's website and copy them into /usr/lib/win32/ (you need to create this directory and copy the files over as root).

okay thanks but what about this VCL player I have been hearing about? do you guys like it?

I'm a KDE user, so: Amarok as a music player and Kaffeine for video. Also Mplayer is very good choice (I'm using it for video, because I'can't get some subtitles get to work in Kaffeine - national encoding)
