Question

I am having the same problem. I also have the Acer Aspire One (mini notebook). It runs on Linux, as stated on the box. NOW...this product was purchased as a christmas gift by my mother, who mentioned it is a Linux Linpus. The research I have been doing says that the mini notebooks run on Linux Linpus Lite, but the manuals nor the box state anything about the system being anything other than simply "Linux".

Besides the MSN problem, I'm just curious what types of "Linux" games can be downloaded on to such a small memory computer, as I hope to find something other than the pre-loaded games.

I do not know anything about this product and wish to gain as much information as i can, so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Your best bet on this, I think, is to post a question on the Aspire One user forum or at the least, have a search on that forum. It never worked on mine either, so I suspect there is a problem with the default client. You may find you can install kopete.

thanks everyone, i did some poking around on theacerguy blog and found that many people were having this issue and after simply doing the live updates, their msn worked....tried it out....the live updates took nearly all day to complete. It was unsuccessful the first time around, but the second time worked like a charm!!! MSN is up and functioning!! Thank you for all of your help!

I haven't done anything with the e-mail because my primary email address is a hotmail account which isn't compatible with this e-mail system, but as far as the msn goes:
go into settings and complete all the live updates that are available for your computer. If it says it couldn't do them all, do it again.
After that restart your laptop and then try to use msn!! Hopefully that works for you. I'm going to attempt setting up the e-mail with my university account, and i'll let you know how that goes!

there is also a firefox plugin "msnmsgr "
http://msnmsgr.mozdev.org/
i gave up on hotmail/msn back in 2000

as for hot mail i remember reading that MS changed the site to work on IE 6,7 and firefox2 only
firefox 3 is blocked ( gives the above error)
try "User Agent Manager" plugin for firefox and set it to tell hotmail that your box is vista( not linux) and that your browser is IE 7 ( not firefox)

Further problems with The Acer One. On top off not originally being able to use the MSN Instant messenger. Now not able to access internet. It's not even letting me access the Network Centre. Any thoughts please.

My niece got the same notebook for Christmas - all went well until she downloaded the updates - she too lost all access to the Internet & the Network Centre.

I've spent the last few hours searching several forums for answers - several point to the updates themselves as the root cause!!

Bit the bullet and burnt the recovery cd to a 2GB usb pendrive on my PC and did a fresh install. {I have no experience of Linux so didn't want to waste any more valuable time going round in circles].

System is back up and running as you can see - I'm refusing to install the 19 updates until further notice.
I'm checking out installing another version of Linux - this Linpus appears to be pretty new and buggy - if I can get a more stable option I think I'll take it instead.

A quick fresh install may suit you also - depending what files you may lose of course.

Best of luck

Homer

wow, what a long process you had to go through...all from completing the live updates! oh boy. please keep us updated on when and if you are ever able to complete them without some sort of problem!

i was unsuccessful at setting up the e-mail system...

I feel as though i can't find much for information on this. The suggestion of visiting the linux site didn't serve me well as i was unable to get anywhere on the site - the links literally lead me nowhere.

I am quite frustrated.
