mplayer sound level and 4.1 speakers

Hi all ! I would require some help with a problem I'm encountering with mplayer :

When setting the sound volume with the mplayer "scrollbar", it's only adjusting sound on the front speakers, while the rear ones remain at the same level. Is there an option like the "software volume" in xmms that would get rid of my problem ?
If it can be of some use, I'm running on a Debian (Sid) with a 2.6.5 kernel with built-in alsa support. I own a SB Live! Value.
Thanks for reading !
