mpg123 and mp3 to wav conversion

okay guys I browsed the forum and found that mp3 files can be converted to wav with the mpg123
i.e

mpg123 -w file.wav file.mp3

but when I try it, it just says command not found. i do have the mpg123 plugin installed for XMMS.

what am I doing wrong?

type
locate 123

and that will list all files with 123 in it. The mpg123 plugin is probably a library that XMMS uses and not an executable. You will need to find the actual mpg123 executable and install that too. I don't know, I have used ogg for ~ 1 year now and all my MP3 knowledge deteriorated quickly.

I don't know your distro, however, linux mpg123 rpm brought up this as the second link.

knmwt15000, just in case you do not know what ogg is:

" Ogg Vorbis is a completely open, patent-free, professional audio encoding and streaming technology with all the benefits of Open Source. " Much better quality than mp3, besides being politically correct. :-)

I agree, I only use oggs now. The quality is better and the filesize is approx. 25% smaller.
