I just installed the mp3plugin for xmms to play mp3s. The strange thing is mp3s play in gnome fine but not in KDE. I checked the input plugins in the preferences menu. what else could it be? please help me. this is crazy.

Are you using aRts server as your soundserver and output plugin? Or something other than aRts and aRts is running? Check preferences-->sound--soundserver to see if aRts starts when KDE does. Whichever it is might produce a clue, either to start it, or not.
