MP 3 player other than XMMS.
 

Hi,

I am a Newbie on Red hat 9.

I have been using XMMS to play my MP3s but the output is real bad....Windows play the same MP3s much better.

Could you plz lemme know if there is any better MP3 player available and where could I get it..??

xmms is really good music player. If the songs sound bad its usually the mp3 file, or the sound card(I have had the sound card issue). Some sound cards sound like crap in linux, to name one santa cruz turtle beach I had to switch to my onboard it sounded so bad. If you are using something like a tutle beach or a creative labs sound card you might want try out your onboard sound. Also red hat 9 is a little out dated, i would try something newer like mandrake 10.

I've recently just had the same problem, as i'm new to linux also. The problem I had was fuzzy, or laggy audio in xmms. I have a Soundblaster Live! Value card. What i did to fix it is to disable aRts server in KDE. That made everything sound soooooooo good, definitly happy with it now. If your using KDE, here are the steps to disable the aRts server... Open up the KDE Control Center. Expand the "Sound" tree. Then click on "Sound System". Then deselect "Start aRts soundserver on KDE Startup". That fixed my sound issue. Hope that helps. Also might wanna try to install the latest drivers for your sound card. If its Soundblaster, try the ALSA drivers. www.alsa-project.org i think. Good Luck!

you could try rythmbox if you use gnome or kde audio programs(i don't remember if noatun or kabooble handle mp3, but maybe via mpg123...).
I don't use kde or gnome so i try to avoid a lot their libraries on my slow pc.
i use xmms and mp3blaster when i am in the black screen :) without any problems

I am using Gnome and using the Onboard sound card model is 82801DB AC'97 Audio (Intel) and the driver is i810_Audio.

Should I install ALSA drivers..? I tried on the Intel site but without luck.

to tell you the truth i dont know why so many people are using redhat 9 its outdated, go with something new like mandrake 10.1 or suse 9.1 they come with alsa. If you really want to use redhat 9 and feal adventures you could install alsa, i would use google to search on how to install it. I would try to explain how, but it can take a long time here.

I agree with the post above, it's best to use newer distros particularly for desktop use because they have better hardware support and new features. If you want to try something similar to redhat 9, then try Fedora Core.

Mplayer will play mp3 and just about anything else.
The gui is kind of shaky but there are many other front ends
available here:

Amarok is another new one out there, that was rated the best MP3 player out there by some Linux magazine (I forget ;)). It was a bit of a bummer to install for me, but you might have a little more luck yourself: http://amarok.kde.org/

I am using Red Hat 9 because in my knowledge this has the best support for multilingual environment. I use it in Korean locale.

Plz let me know of any other distro which better support for multilingual env...I would certainly like to switch over.

I downloaded "intel8xo-alsa-1.0.1.sh" from the intel site but couldn't install it successfully. After running for some time, the script file says that it couldn't load the following drivers:-
ALSA Base driver
OSS PCM Module
OSS Mixer Module
OSS Midi Module

On trying to continue with the installation, it says that "couldn't locate alsactl. Do you have Alsa Utils installed?"

on opening the "intel8xo-alsa-1.0.1.sh" in vi editor, it displays the following info:-

Coud anyone plz help me installing this correctly?

I would also try installing the other MP 3 Player but as it seems problem is with the sound card drivers....let us try solving that first.
