Mozilla Plugins

I am trying to install the flash plugin for mozilla. I read all I needed to do was copy libflashplayer.so and flashplayer.xpt to my Mozilla plugins directory. I believe I have, but it still doesn't work.

jth@starhost:/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins$ ls
flashplayer.xpt libflashplayer.so libnullplugin2.so

After restarting my browser, about: plugins only shows libnullplugin2.so

Can someone help me get this to work?

BTW, this is on

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20031107 Debian/1.5-3

That's funny because I read http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/firefox-linux.html
Quote:

If Flash Player does not work, make sure you have a compatible version of libstdc++ present (libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3). On RedHat based systems, install the package "compat-libstdc++" (Package "compat" on SuSE). Alternatively, you can try using Flashfix.

I forgot to mention that I believe I have that

starhost:/home/jth# locate libstdc++.so
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-linux/3.3.3/libstdc++.so
/usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5
/usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5.0.5

flash works in both my mozilla 1.6 and firefox 0.8 browsers. the files libflashplayer.so and flashplayer.xpt are in my /home/miner/.mozilla/plugins directory.

well, I still don't know why that didn't work, but I just installed it via "apt-get install flashplayer-mozilla" and that worked fine....
