Mozilla Java Plug-in

I'm trying to install the Java plug in for the Mozilla browser. I'm running RH8. How do you install the Java plug-in? I have the download on disk. To install it, I need to be root I suspose. I set the system to boot up using the "graphical interface"- but I'm unable to login using su and my password. Thus I am unable to log in a root. Can I do the install from the termainal shell? I really like Linux, have used it for years. I've just never bothered to install the Java for Mozilla before. Or, truth be know, much else- the RH distro comes with pretty much everything I could use- and then some. Now I want the Java so that my 10 year old daughter can play some java games on line. Thanks for your advise.

su is only the console command from my understanding to log into root from the graphical interface type in "root" as user and your root password.

You don't necessarily need to log into the system as root. You can just switch to root from the command line, using the su command for the duration of the installation.
