Moving / partition
 

Hi, I have a system where the / partition keeps running out of space. For some unknown reason the last SA put everything under one partition. I have another physical disk in the system, what i want to do is partition that disk and move the existing / over to it and get the system to boot off the new disk. I have some ideas on how to do this but wanted to get some other input from people who may have done this or know exactly how.

System is Centos 4, ext3 partitions.

If you want to move, resize or break-up / then you must boot from something else -- which is one of the best reasons for not having "everything under one partition"! To be fair, "everything under one partition" was popular for a while in the early days of Linux -- perhaps as a reaction to overly complex multi-partition setups and falling HDD prices. People have advocated it her on LQ recently.

If you want specific advice you must give specific information -- like the size of the existing /, the size of "another physical disk" and whether it's all available, what sort of Linux you have available to boot (installation CD or DVD, Knoppix ...)

Existing / is 9.7 GB. I actually have 2x146GB disks that will be RAID 1. I could boot off any recovery cd or DVD.....

Out of curiosity: why move the (supposedly) static / off the
HDD and not what ever keeps filling the partition up?

I would have thought that leaving / in place, and moving
the OTHER stuff would be
a) more sensible and
b) much less hassle

Slightly off-topic, but:

There is NOTHING wrong with having only one partition....The trick is to have big drives and big partitions. Storage is cheap.

Ummm ... you may find nothing wrong with that. I do.
At least if you don't qualify what you're doing about/
against that one thing filling up.

In the end all it gives you is a 10x, 20x, 100x longer
time till your problem occurs if something keeps filling
that one partition up.

It was only last week that I saw a box that someone here
hadn't built to standard go "boom" because / filled up,
/var was not on a separate file-system and it became
impossible to even log in on the console. We had to hard
boot the box off a DVD to clean up space. Thank God it
wasn't a machine that runs any tier-1 apps.
