i am with redhat 8.0

can any body tell

how can i play movies (.Dat, mpeg) file in linux and also

when i try to play tux racer or chromium game the graphics are very slow to move

and the computer hangs

can anybody tell why this is happening ?

even i am running with good 1024* resolution with 16 bit depth

ensure that you have drm (direct rendering) enabled for your video card.

as for movies check out xine and / or mplayer

You must make sure that you have set up 3d-acceleration correctly..
This is mainly done in the file /etc/X11/XF86config
(There are also some graphical tools that are supposed to help you making changes to your configuration - you may try these as well)

i don't know how to check DRM if any body can tell i shall be very thankful to that person

after you've started X windows type in a terminal
'glxinfo | grep -i direct'

if it comes back with
Direct Rendering: yes

then you're fine else you'll have to fiddle with it.

For most movies you need /usr/lib/win32 - I don't think that comes with a default RH installation - check at http://www.mplayerhq.hu and download the win32 codecs.
