moved to ubuntu from XP. I need a proxy web filter like the one I have used for ever.
 

Under Xp I use Proxomitron proxy To block banners adds and everything else.
The creator has died so the source code is not available.

This handy and hardy program is still on many freeware sites but there is no one to ask to port it to linux.
My question is -- can any one point me toward a similar program for ubuntu???
Preferably one that is compiled ,ready to install and, of course, works.

Squid is the proxy most people use if they need one.

However, from your question it sounds like you're more concerned about browsing experience that a full proxy setup. If that is the case I'd suggest you use the Firefox browser with the "NoScript" plugin and the "Ad Block Plus" plugin. The former blocks all javascript and flash items and the latter blocks ads. By default Firefox itself blocks popups. Both NoScript and ABP are configurable so you can determine what to allow and what to prevent and create filters as you wish.

Squid is very powerful, and flexible. But configuration can be daunting, when setting it up for the first time.

to think of it, i believe there are GUI's for squid available, which let's you "easily" configure
it visually, but i'm not sure.

If squid isn't what you want, need, etc...
you could just try looking up the word proxy in synaptic (package manager, under system menu), and see what results it returns (and check the description, maybe something in there might be what you want, if again, squid isn't what you want)

I use Firefox in all my OS's. A web filter/proxy does both jobs.

Privoxy is the name of a sort of ported clone from source forge.
I can't figure out how to set it up so I moved on.

Oh by the way I quit using ubuntu and am trying out fedora, I got tired of all the crashes.

Thanks for the input, but I want a program that does both jobs for any activity on the internet.

Many browsers have an ad-blocking add-on, including Firefox.

I certainly read your question and responded BOTH to the request for Proxy (by suggesting Squid) and to your reasoning for that which I suggested doesn't require a Proxy.

If you now wish to pretend that you didn't mention your reasoning or that we should have ignored it then you're just being plain silly. If you wish to imply that you asked for a port of the exact same product to Linux then you word it badly. In either case your response shows you're an ingrate - rather than admitting you phrased your original question badly to achieve the aim you wanted you'd prefer to put the blame on those who tried to help you.
