If you are using an old Linux it will call an IDE disk hda and a Sata sda.

How can a Linux installed in a hda run on a sda? You need to change all the device names.

---------------------------Another possibility------------------------

If you run an IDE and a Sata disks the IDE disk get detected first and given the no. 1 disk status.

Putting the Linux in a Sata/IDE set up will not work because Sata is the No. 2 disk when all the installed system files say the Linux was installed in No. 1 disk.

/boot/grub/menu.lst
/boot/grub/device.map
/etc/fstab

Or use a Linux with the latest kernel (newer than 2.6.20) as a Pata will have the same device name as a Sata.
