Move files on a linux partion to a NTFS partioned harddisk
 

Hi there!

sry for my spelling, but am danish ;)

I have had a harddisk for some time runnning as an ftp server on a linux machine, but now the linux operatiing system is gone, and im sitting here with my 120gb harddisk, and wants to move the files over to my NTFS harddisk, but my Windows XP cannot see the harddrive...

Anybody who has an idea of how im getting winXP to read the files on my linux harddisk??

Can you resize and repartition so you have free space using a Fat32 partition? You could boot up using one of the live cd's like Knoppix and copy from the Linux partitions to a Fat32 partition. However because linux can't safely write to an NTFS partition, you need another common file type to copy the files too.

If you could borrow and external usb drive that's formatted in FAT32 then you could use that like you would a floppy drive to transfer files to temparily.

Another idea is to boot up with knoppix and transfer the files to a networked drive.

Theres explore2fs but it only reads ext2 and ext3 filesystems. If the filesystems are not ext2 or ext3, you can download a trial of VMware and try to use the physical drive in VMware and go into runlevel 3. Then run smbclient to mount your Windows XP shared directories that has write access and transfer the files that way.

If the LINUX drive can not boot then the hard drive could have crashed. You have to resort to a data restoring service.
