mouse xwindows

i have installed red hat 7.3 almost succesfully on my toshiba laptop. the x windowing enviroment fails to work when i type startx and says that the device /dev/input/mice does not exist. i go to /dev/input and cat mice and it also says that the device does not exist. this is becoming quite annoying as i have been trying to sort this out for almost a day with no success.
i have a touchpad on my laptop and that worked fine in the installation but i guess not now....... i will soon try to by a usb mouse to fit into my laptop so that i can test a proper mouse out and see if the mouse will register in /dev/input/

thanks for all who have helped me so far..
