Mouse troubles in X
 

I'm having some difficultiies with my mouse(s) whilst running X. I'm currently using Slackware 9 and the KDE desktop environment.

The trouble is that my cursors behave normally when moving through long areas of travel however, when making small movements such as to close a window, my cursor sticks giving a stuttering effect. I'm using graphics software but it's just proving an absolute nightmare right now.

The situation is exactly the same on two vastly differing machines, using different mouses and a different install of Slackware 9. One mouse is a Samsung PS2 optical mouse with a scrollwheel. The other a generic PS2 ball mouse with three buttons. Oddly though, my Logitech trackerball mouse does not suffer such hinderances.

I've tried changing my XF86Setup otions for the mouse and messed around with the advanced mouse settings in KDE which will affect the cursors movement but this same problem still remains. Any ideas anyone?

I've got an optical wireless mouse which shows similar behaviour for a moment shortly after 'waking up' when I haven't used it for a time as if it had to realign its sensors. Mostly it happens when I hold the mouse at a certain angle to the mousepad (which is printed so I guess Moiré effects are the reason for some of the stuttering). Have you tried a different surface for the mouse?

With ball mice such behaviour usually means that the contacts should be cleaned...

Well yeah like I say, i've used my trackball mouse which works a treat. It's definately not the mice that are at fault, they both work flawlessly in winblows. It's as if there is a threshold before the mouse activates or excesssive latency. I have set the threshold to it's lowest too, 1 pixel but the exact problem still remains.

I know there's an option somewhere of setting the resolution for your mouse. If your mouse resolution was lower than the screen resolution then it might be the cause of these problems.
