Mouse trail after coming out of hibernation, Ubuntu 9.10

Everything is normal until I put my laptop into hibernation. On waking up, it seems to resume OK except the cursor arrow is surrounded by a square black box which gradually obliterates the screen as the mouse is moved around. The only option is then to restart Ubuntu. I have been unable to find anything relevant using the search facility. Can anyone suggest a solution please?

What version of Ubuntu are you using? I had a similar problem, and upgrading to 9.10 fixed it.

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 with latest updates.

Hmm... What video card do you have? And what driver are you using?

It is a Targa laptop, about 5 years old. I think the video display is by VIA. I have the installation disc but the drivers are for Windows XP so presumably do not apply. I just did the standard Ubuntu installation. I remember a message about proprietary drivers not being found but no suggestion of what to do next. Now, under Administration/Hardware drivers, the only proprietary driver mentioned is the modem which I do not use anyway. Hope this helps.

Sorry, I have no idea how to fix this. Does it do the same thing when suspending to RAM (aka sleep mode)?

I suggest select in top panel
system > preferences> appearence > visual effects
Select none.
Then your cursor will move smoothly.

If you find this useful than thank me by pressing thumbs up button.Thank You.

Seems to be OK when put to sleep and woken again.

system > preferences> appearance > visual effects > Select none, was already selected so no clues here either. Thanks to both of you for trying to help.

(1)Actually my PC is 1GHz , 384MB RAM and just 64MB video memory integrated on motherboard. When I had installed ubuntu 8.04 I got small squares trailing the cursor then selecting none for visual effects helped.
If on waking up again you get same problem you can reselect none ( though it is already set ) though not much sense but maybe it will reinitialize setting .

(2)You can also run command 'xrefresh'(without quotes) in terminal.Hope it helps.

Code:

You need to find out about your video card type, is it a nvidia chipset? Then install the proper driver for it.
Or put a picture of your cat on the desktop, your mouse will move faster. :)
