If you run mouseconfig it gives you a list that you can try one by one. It's similar to the Slackware 8.1 install menu or the pkgtool menu--not GUI, but not black and white text either. I'm having much difficulty right now with my Logitech 3 button serial mouse as well. Nothing I've tried works. You can read about it here in the Hardware section. (Sorry for the shameless plug )

I would like to thank everybody who is helpling me. I have tried a lot of protocols, but no protocols worked. I'll keep trying to discover the solution. The xfree86 website doesn't give any information any information about it and they don't make any email address available to solve questions then my only information source are mates like you all.

I'm still looking for a list of mouse protocols that are available. Not having much luck. Running the mouseconfig tool and then seeing what the mouse link points to does give some clues as to what DRIVER to use. The xf86config tool gives similar clues when you run it for mouse protocols. Still, no comprehensive list exists that I can find (and it's about to get even slower for me as my real life speeds up now)...
