mouse problems in Gentoo command line

I have a Logitech Cordless Freedom Optical keyboard/mouse combo running on latest Gentoo. In the command line, i would like to have mouse support for copy/paste purposes. The problem is that everytime I click the mouse button I get the letter "Q". Right click = "W". This happens before I am even running gpm. If I then start "gpm -m /dev/mouse -t ps2" (even though this is usb mouse), when I try to copy something on the screen I get a whole bunch of the letter "Q" printing.

For example:

user@PC $QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ <-- me attempting to copy something from the same console window
user@PC $WWWWWW<insert the text I really wanted to paste to the command line>

The same thing happens after I try to paste, but with the letter "W". This is really weird, can someone point me in the right direction? Numerous google searches yeilded nothing ;-(

I never figured out how to fix this! It was a pain in the arse trying to navigate config files without copy/paste, but I finally got my system up and running nicely and didn't need to fix the console problem...until the next time!??! So I'm still wondering, like you are, how the heck to fix this abnormality?
