Mouse pointer issue with Puppy and LUbuntu

I'm trying to install Puppy on an old P3 notebook with 256megs of ram, and when I use the 16 bit color setting I can't see the mouse pointer, and with the 24 bit it's a squiggly box like one of those new 2D/postage bar codes. I've tried Vesa which works, but then I go blind before it loads X/the GUI and also when I shut down, which is probably when it asks me to save the session right?

The pointer issue also happened when I tried LUbuntu. This notebook (Sony Vaio PCG-F490) uses a NeoMagic adapter.

Oh yeah, on another note I installed Puppy on a separate partition so I'm wondering if GRUB is on the puppy CD to set up dual boot? Or do I have to just install it separately?

I just did, it's the same. It's not that the mouse doesn't work, the video does not register the cursor or doesn't register the pointer correctly. I can see different parts light up when I roll over them but I just can't see where I'm at.
