Mouse pointer delay after enabling ethernet connection

I'm very new to Linux. I installed the latest 64-bit version of Mandriva a week ago. Since then, I have been having two major problems. The first problem concerns my ethernet adaptor, eth1. It is set to automatically launch at startup, but for some reason I have to hit the "connect eth1" button in the taskbar every single time I restart my computer.

The second problem concerns my pos microsoft optical wheel usb mouse with two buttons. Between the time I start linux and the time I hit the "connect eth1" button, the mouse moves across the screen smoothly in a normal progression. Once I enable the ehternet connection, the mouse pointer maintains a choppy movement pattern. The pointer freezes for a split second, and then moves along.

Also, when I shut down the system I receive an error message regarding eth1. It says something about “cannot read vpd keys,” whatever that means.

I would greaty appreciate any help that can be offered. I really want to learn how to use Linux, and these minor issues are quite a nuisance. If you require further information to help diagnose my linux issues, I will be able to reply to any messages left after I get home from work tonight.

Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Most likely you have a resource conflict with regard to the mouse moving erratically - try disabling unused devices in BIOS to free up some resources. I had a similar problem with nforce3 chipset and SATA - solution was to use a different controller, fortunately there was one on the motherboard.

The network problem may be related if it cannot be started at boot because of resource conflicts -

I had typed you a much more elaborate response but just as I posted it the thing bounced cause the other thread was CLOSED

Hi, I am having the problem as speedoavenger. I have recently installed suse 10.0 and everything works
fine apart from the slow responce from the mouse pointer. I have a "microsoft wireless optical mouse" t
hat is a usb mouse that is connected the the ps2 port via its own adaptor. All mouse movements, click a
nd scroll wheel work ok but with the same lack of responce. Everything happens in some time after the m
ouse has been moved.
If this is a conflict with other hardware how do I go checking for it. I have a cable modem connected t
o the ethernet card so ethernet is allways connected, how do you turn ethernet on and off.
If anyone can help I would bevery greatfull, the mouse is very painfull to work with but so nessassery.

Thanks in advance.
