I just got done recompiling my kernel (2.4.23) under Slackware 9.1. When I rebooted I got this:

Starting gpm: /usr/sbin/gpm -m /dev/mouse -t ps2
gpm: oops() invoked from gpm.c(977)
/dev/mouse: No such file or directory

In the past the first command would result in my having the mouse in the console. Not that I needed it. Unfortunately now when I try to start X I get the following errors:

No core pointer

Fatal server error:
failed to initalize core devices

I checked the XFree86.0.log and it says that it couldn't open /dev/mouse "No such file or directory." This mouse is a ps2 mouse. I had it working before I recompiled and I really didn't change anything so I have no idea.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Nevermind. I should have looked in my /dev/ directory and realized that if I used:

gpm -t /dev/psaux -t ps2

it works! Sorry about the post!

just trying to shoot from the dark here....

when run menuconfig, or xconfig. does it show mouse is enable ? if so, is it enable as module or at boot.

if its run as module, does module load at boot?
hope this will get you to the solution closer
