mouse buttons to back and forward browser

A young person, just getting introduced to Linux, asked me tonight how to use the extra buttons on the Logitech trackball. It has the normal left and right click buttons, and then two smaller buttons. My guess is that they function as scroll buttons and look like a mouse wheel.

Since a mouse button can be converted into a keyboard sequence, with X, a couple of questions remain:

-what button on the trackball is what mouse button (could use trial and error)

-what is the keyboard sequence to have seamonkey perform back and forward navigation

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hmm, i use logitech mx500 mouse and have 2 side buttons on mouse along with 3 more buttons near the scroll. Back and Forward on side dont work in browser, but they are responsive- i know it because they work in games (OpenArena). First maybe inspect if they are responsive in other programs. Also when my friend helped me to setup mouse manually i know that "ZAxisMapping" option in xorg.conf had effect on mouse buttons- with some setup mousewheel stpped working or worked wrong. I have "4 5 6 7" at ZAxisMapping. I did my configuration through #X -configure.
