Question Mouse and USB to PS2 converter

I installed Debian and when it restarted the mouse was dead.This was mit a USB to PS2 converter for the mouse. When I tried a gain, this time with a normal PS2 mouse, all was well.

Why is dis ?

Obviously the USB to PS2 converter is not recognized properly as a device. Does the USB device has it's own power supply, or is it supposed to get it's power supply from the computer?
