Hi
the windowmanager/desktopmanager is not the issue
You have to make changes in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
concerning your inputdevice like this;
Section "InputDevice"

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
# Option "Emulate3Buttons"
# Option "Emulate3Timeout" "50"

note the ZAxisMapping and make sure to use the right protocol

take a look here for more info
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/xwin/xmouse.html
it's mandrakes but it is useful for other distro's as well
otherwise do a search on this forum it has been asked before
good luck
