Mounting USB, locating files on USB in Unbuntu

New user to Linux. As a school project we installed Unbuntu and created a LAMP server. Trying to figure out how to mount USB device and view files on said device . thanks

my experience with fedora at least is when i plug in my fone, camera, usb drive, mp3/video player ... a window pops up asking me if a want to browse the files using nautilus.

i think sometimes i remember having problems... run this command:
Code:
sudo tail -f /var/log/messages
then plug in your device (it will give clues as to what device (if any) is attached to it).
if you post that info maybe we can guide you better.

depending on what is provided something like this can mount it manually:
Code:
sudo mount /dev/sdxy /whatever/floats/your/boat
