Mounting of drives in Ubuntu. Please help. win 8.1 and ubuntu 14.04 dual boot
i have windows 8.1 and ubuntu 14.04 ....now wen i try to access a drive of windows in ubuntu it says failed to mount.
then i used "sudo ntfsfix /dev/sda4" for mounting the drives ......it worked for all drives except the E drive (not the system drive). it gives error windows is hibernated , shutdown windows. I shutdown my windows properly but still that particular drive refuses to mount.. any solns? |
This may help. Not positive.
I would go back into Windows and do chkdsk on the e:/ drive. then come back into Linux and see if it will mount. May not do much but worth a try.

Windows 8 has a fastboot mode which is enabled by default. The PC actually hibernates when it is shutdown which is why you see the error messages when trying to mount. ntfsfix can not repair all errors so as suggested try running chkdsk from windows. Writing to a hibernated disk could corrupt the filesystem.

Hi
I was posting reply and mine got lost. Check if there is a file on the root of that E drive. If there is a hiberfil.sys file there, you may delete it at your own risk. check if that solves that problem of yours. Also solutions in the computer world are never persistent. They only last as long as the previous update. |
I cant access or see my D:> drive either! Maybe linux cant see the ntfs partitions? or the partition with set security? but I can see the C: drive! so I dont think that's the case.
when I try to mount any of the sda drives it says it cant find it in etc/fstab or mtab I was thinking maybe windows hibernation file is on that drive and that is why we cannot see it? |

I got Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 14.04 |
Others with same problem
Ok, it seems that people have been facing same issues of this sort.
Due to the fast boot option in Windows 8.1, Ubuntu won't mount that partition for Read/Write and only for Read. You must disable Fast Boot in windows first. http://askubuntu.com/questions/43963...clean-file-sys http://askubuntu.com/questions/46463...n-ubuntu-14-04 http://itsfoss.com/solve-ntfs-mount-...s-8-dual-boot/ |
I posted a message again, asked to be moderated. I am not fond of that.
You have to turn off the Fast Startup in win8.1 I read around. |

on this machine I am using Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.4 I upgraded my laptop to win 8.1 and I was using ubuntu 12.4 as well but windows quit in middle of the upgrade (from 8 to 8.1) and ubuntu quit all together. I mean I up win7 to win8 no problem but from 8 to 8.1 it messed up and later I found out the MS deletes all your backup files so you cant go back (I got this info from their own ms site) so I ordered win8 dvd but was Not bootable??!(can u say stupid)? After wasting lot of my time and money I kept running chckdsk /a/f or whatever for about a YEAR until one day it worked and windows came up but Ubuntu never came up again?! I ran Wubi recently but they have discontinued wubi (like idiots) and I just assume lay off ubuntu and/or go to another version of linux or get a dedicate machine. I am not gonna risk messing my windows up because I got too much info on it (on my D: drive) |
