Question mounting drives and devices as an ordinary user

How do i mount any partition or device(say CDROM) as an ordinary user?modified fstab so that it contains the user option also added uid= and gid= options in addition to that. But nothing seems to be working.Says must be superuser to mount.I use RedHat 7.2 kernel version 2.4.7-10.thanks in advance.

add the option 'user' in fstab, in the comma delimited list, and ditch the uid and gid options

And also ditch 'default' if you haven't done that. Generically 'default' is fine, but for ntfs and vfat you will want to 'customize' the delimiter list. Here is what your fstab should look like for a CDROM on a sys with 1 HD and no extra partitions mounting it under it's normal place:
/dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,noauto,ro 0 0
or something similar to that. Can you mount with the 'mount' command instead of simply adding it to fstab?

only root can normally mount devices not already listed in fstab
