Mounting cdrom from shell prompt?!?

Hi all,
I think I have got RH linux 7.1 installed properly on this old laptop. However, I don't have a window manager for it. I am trying to install WindowMaker now with a cd from the shell prompt. How do I actually mount the cdrom so as to get the file into the harddisk? I have checked out a website about this but there seems to be a problem. When I type dmesg on prompt, I see this:

hdc: ATAPI 6X CD-ROM Drive,128K cache
Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision 3.12
hdcacket command error:status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error}
hdcacket command error: 0x30

can someone explain to me what the above means and how to fix it? Thanx a lot!
