I would start with the regular onslaught:
Code:
fdisk -l
Assuming your external hard drive is still /dev/sdb:
Code:
cfdisk /dev/sdb
You could always throw in a "df" and a "mount" for good measure.

Remember that the above commands will need to be run with super user privileges. If you're running a standard Linux distro this means you'll need to become root before running them. If you're running one of the Ubuntu derivatives then you'll need to run the commands through sudo.

And try not to get too impatient. Remember the people here aren't paid to help you with your problem, so it could take hours/days to get a response sometimes if people are preoccupied, especially on weekends. I realize it can be frustrating waiting for a response when you have an inoperable system, but sometimes it's for the best to wait instead of trying out commands found on a random google search.

I know people take their time to help us out here and I really appreciate it. I will try to learn to be more patient. Hope it's not too late
I had to run the commands you suggested in root.

~# fdisk -l

Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00091280

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

/dev/sda5 29700 30402 5639168 82 Linux swap / Solaris

Disk /dev/sdb: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

cfdisk /dev/sdb gives me this (I guess because my external drive is sda now):
Code:
FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 1: Partition ends in the final partial cylind
Press any key to exit cfdisk
If I type cfdisk /dev/sda I get exactly the same line
But if I type cfdisk /dev/sda1 I get this:
Code:

Unfortunately it's far from being solved. I am thanking for helping me, not for solving the problem. Not even sure if it can be solved at this point.

Alright, so it looks like maybe you rebooted the system with the external drive attached, and your system decided to swap the naming order. That's no problem, because your fstab is apparently using the UUID when mounting (which is typical), so it grabbed the correct drive despite the name change. Just be aware of it so you don't accidentally modify the wrong drive.

That output from cfdisk is very odd, especially the bad primary partition message on both sda and sdb. This is the type of output I would have expected (this is from one of my systems):
Code:
                         cfdisk (util-linux-ng 2.17.2)

                              Disk Drive: /dev/sda
                       Size: 640135028736 bytes, 640.1 GB
Heads: 255 Sectors per Track: 63 Cylinders: 77825

Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    sda1 Boot Primary Linux ext3 [/boot] 205.64
    sda2 Primary Linux swap / Solaris 16779.58
    sda3 Primary Linux ext2 314572.44*
    sda5 NC Logical Linux ext3 308577.05*
                            Logical Free Space 0.36*
What is the output if you run the following (as root):
Code:
mkdir -p /mnt/temp
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/temp
(assuming your external drive is still sda and hasn't reverted back to sdb).

First command didn't do anything, while the second one you gave me resulted in this error message

~# mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/temp
Code:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so

suicidaleggroll:

Thanks for the info on df -T, I wasn't aware of that. Went to the link you posted and read that. I didn't try the other commands but the parted command showed the fstype for an unmounted partition on my system.

Fada:

The first command you refer to 'mkdir -p /mnt/temp' would create a directory named temp in the /mnt directory of the system on which you ran it. Did you check to see if it did? ls /mnt/ There would not be any output in the terminal from that command.

In your post this morning, you posted an error you got on both drives from running the command: cfdisk /dev/sda, cfdisk /dev/sdb

Quote:
FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 1: Partition ends in the final partial cylind
Press any key to exit cfdisk
If you look at the fdisk output for the 250GB drive, you will see at the top '30401' cylinders and for sda2 and sda5, it is 30402. The same is true for the other drive except the numbers are different as it is a larger drive: 38913 -38914. I really don't know first, if that would cause the problem but seems to be directly related to the error message. If this could be at least part of the problem, perhaps someone will be able to help to change. I have no idea.

The post seems to have got a little off track your original issue of wanting to get data off the drive. Have you tried testdisk on your machine to get data off the external.

yancek, how do I check if the directory was created? I have no clue. How do you test disk to get the data off the external?
I recently thought it would be a good idea to reinstall OS and make another partition. Thinking it would help the external to be installed. Then there was a choice to check the computer and I clicked yes and it was working on it and scanning all evening and all night. In the morning I cancelled it.
Thank you!!!

I tried the commands again, but with sda1 and sdb1 options and here what I got.

~# mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/temp
Code:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so
root@fada-laptop:~# mkdir -p /mnt/temp
root@fada-laptop:~# mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/temp
Code:
mount: /dev/sdb1 already mounted or /mnt/temp busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdb1 is already mounted on /mnt/temp
sdb1 is my laptop drive(used to be my external). Now external is sda1. I have to check it out again to be sure it didn't switch back again.

It's not looking promising, it seems the partition table got corrupted somehow. You should still be able to do a raw disk scan to recover files though even if the partition table can't be repaired. I have used photorec with great success in the past (part of the testdisk suite that yancek mentioned).

I've downloaded it and now am trying it. At least it's doing something I will let you know the result. THANK YOU!

So far it seems it recovered all the files that I've ever deleted or some pics from the sites I've ever visited. Nothing from my folders. I guess this program only recovers the deleted files.
