Mount logic in Fedora (or any newer Linux)

I have noticed a new thing that I hadn't in old versions of linux (old Redhat versions).

When Fedora (8) boots, it automatically mounts all windows/linux partitions under /media directory. These partitions are usually not mentioned in /etc/mtab, let alone /etc/fstab. So, how does Fedora mount these folders. Is there a file where you can explicitly instruct Fedora to either load or not load a certain partition?
