mount and unmount on the fly

Im working my way through a LFS install and have got core kde packages installed with a few other basic packages.

Im having difficulty in mounting and unmounting my other hd partitions, rom drives and floppy.

At the moment ive got the relevant bits added to etc/fstab but this means to open the cdrom drawer I need to unmount and then remount after ive changed the cd.

How can I get it so I can just use the rom drives and floppy etc without having to change stuff on the screen.
I thought autofs might have been a solution but it isnt.

The other reason why I want to use another method is because I get errors on startup if there isnt a cd in the drive.

I hope my problem is clear!
Do I need a package similar to autofs? What do I need to get my system to recognise ntfs?

Many Thanks
Rik

Can't you make a script to mount and unmount, so you just have to execute the script to mount or unmount.
