motherboard problems
I am a first time user trying to build a simple LAMP server to host some domains (email and html)
I have tried installing ubuntu server on a system with a GA-73VM-S2 mother board but it crashes with a kernal panic - reesarch indicates this a known issue with this board and ubuntu. Will Linux run OK with this board? If not would a ASUS P5GC MX be OK? Thanks Sandy |
Welcome to LQ!
Linux is the kernel. An operating system is the Linux kernel plus other software. Ubuntu is not a standard Linux distribution. Just because it does not work on a particular motherboard does not mean other Linux distributions will not work on it. |
Thanks for the reply - I understand there may be differences between versions of Linux - but what I was hoping for was an indication the motherboard I mentioned might be known to some Linux users who could express an opinion as to its suitability.

Thanks for the comment. A few things have happened
1 debian-40r3-i386 did install but would not run reliably 2 installed an IDE hard drive and reinstalled(but wont recognise onboard ethernet) 3 system still unreliable when booting 4 purchased new motherboard/processor today (with standard intel chipset) and will retry Will post again if I get lucky |

I probably don't like Ubuntu any more than you do, but what facts support calling it non-standard? -- I'd love some ammunition to counter their flaming fan-boys. |
