Is there an easy command that will just tell me what motherboard I am using? I tried lspci -v and I can't really see anything about a motherboard

My guess is no. A computer operates by detecting devices--eg cpu, memory, PCI bus, usb hub, etc. A motherboard is just a piece of plastic and copper traces to hold it all together.
You can dig thru the output of dmesg, but I think opening the case and looking will be much quicker. Make sure you ground yourself to the case with anti-static bracelet (or just keep one hand on the case while you are poking around.)

You might try installing and using lshw (that's an L, not a 1). Mine spits out a motherboard description, not sure if it's right though since it's running on a virtual machine...

Well, I'll be darned---works on my machine (ubuntu 606)---and it was already installed...

Not to hijack this thread, but I have a question for pixellany: Are you going to be a "Guru" or a "LQ Addict" when you hit the 5000 post mark? Your other posts at LQ certainly seem to qualify you as Guru... :D

I had no idea that I would have to make such a decision....
