I'm planning a complete re-install tomorrow of RH9 on my system. This week has been a test to see if I could switch over & the verdict is in. "Bye Bye XP I'm off to see the wizard!"
Anyway, I was just wondering if ya'll could give me some tips on making the most effective installation. Questions:
How large should my swap partition be? (I am placing this partition first as per earlier directions). I have a 30G & the whole thing'll go Linux.
Is the COMPLETE Custom installation the best idea? I don't want to end up missing components like I've run into this week.
Anything else you can suggest up-front would be great. I've got a list of programs & apps to add afterwards. Thanks.
your swap partition size depends on size of your memory - it should be double-to-triple size. for example, if you have 256 mb of RAM, your swap should be at least 512MB, but no more tham 762mb (ther's no need)
you should do custom installation if you know what you want. i'm using mandrake and when i used custom, there were couple of levels of importance of applications (eg. xWindow = very important, mozilla = not so important, and so on) so you shouldn't be able to skip some important apps. anyway, if you're not sure about certain app, install it.
but as we're into this theme, i have a question too: is it possible to install only KDE, (without GNOME, i mean)? would that allow me to use some of the apps (GIMP,...)?
Ok so 762M for the swap partition is as large as it needs to be? I think, currently, I have it set to 1G. I don't really mind using that much. I've got a 60G so a couple of Gs aren't going to hurt.
i don't think so - it's probably quite tricky.
but you shouldn't worry about the size of a swap - double-memory is just fine. i have 256MB of RAM and 500MB swap - using about 97% of physical memory(ram) and abot 20% of swap during normal using of comp.
i0m also planning to recompile the kernel because i'm quite sure it's not working perfectly (i can't install alsa sound driver, can't reconfigure it in kde's control centre...) but (as a newbie) i'm not sure about how it's done...
if you figure it out, let me now, will you? thanx
before installatio you should decide what apps you prefer because every distro provides 4-5 similar apps, you need only one of them....but it's not very important - i installed lots of stuff, tried it all, and now i'm thinking of reinstalling mdk with specified apps only...
