thanks for all the help yesterday, guys, however new problems have cropped up (unsurprisingly :-))

1. KPPP - i set up all the required modem and ISP options, my modem's on dev/ttys1, i believe, after fiddling here and there i got a ring tone which gave me some short-lived joy. When my modem dialled up the ISP (ic24) i heard the familiar bleeping and screeching. when it reached the stage where (in Win95) my username and password is usually asked for, then it died. yes, it died. i suspect it may have something to do with my not providing a login script (but i don't need one, according to a chap on the Gllug list), seeing as it asked for my username and password at startup. can anyone confirm this and/or direct me to a suitable login script that would work with ic24?

2. i find it literally incredible that the automounter/unmounter STILL does not work. how do i unmount zip disks? every time i try, it causes my drive to disappear....

3. again unsurprisingly, my system is completely fudged after excessive tweaking, i'm restoring it later, but in the meantime, can i download a pre-prepared boot floppy from any site? it must be the boot one, not the install one, as i'm sure there is something wrong with the one i have....

4. why do i feel as if i've left the frying pan for the fire when i start kde? maybe because so far, it has crashed each and every time i've tried it. the whole point of using linux was so my computer would be stable. oh well, looks like dual-boot time....

thanks again for all the help, and please direct any replies to the above to my email

Kppp Answer

Well for one thing, what ISP are you using, sometimes it depends on the ISP or whatever but here's the case, I had the same problem, everything was correct, and after it dialed out, it would just die, give a funky error and that was it. I spent like 3 or 4 days, trying different things. Then it dawned on me, my username for the ISP, i thought hey, for the username, I'll just try the whole email address, wha'la. That worked for me. If you already tried that and it doesn't work, I don't know, checked out your ISP for some support online. Most don't support over the phone but have help online. That is where I found login scripts and other stuff when I was going thru Mindspring a long time ago.

Hope this Helps,

Drew

For numero 1+2

I think that the Zip drive may have been successfully removed even though you cannot see it still, because Linux considers it a removable media type. Therefore, if nothing is mounted then it ain't there! I dont know if this is true, but have you tried to mount it back again?

Did you recieve the error, 'pppd died unexpectedly' from KPPP? This is a very common error, and one which I still haven't found an answer for, but there are a few documents which are about may be able to help you. You may also want to try another dialer, such as minicom if you can.
