More kernel compilation questions

Compiling a kernel isnt as easy as it seems ... at least for me. The few hundred dozens of questions really got me thinking if I really should give up on computers and go back tapping on a 1980 typewriter. There are a lot of guides on compiling a kernel, and if followed accordingly, it 'shouldnt' be a problem, but the thing is the questions asked during the compilation process is tougher than those I heard from the tv series "Who wants to be a millionaire". Is there a site that provide 'understandable' descriptions of those questions ? I have attempted compiling a kernel for 6 times and spent more than a week looking for answers and help, I just want build myself a workable kernel. thanx

Personally, I've found if you use "make xconfig" the graphical dialog seems self-explanatory. There's even an "info" button next to each item iirc. If you just want something "workable", I'd suggest just using a precompiled kernel from a distro. Last time I recompiled my kernel was on Knoppix, and I noticed very minor speed improvements due to my changes, but overall, it doesn't really seem worth the hassle for most people (including me). I guess if you have a lot of free time some day... ;-)
