monitor set up problems, vga1 not found

hi i desperatly need some help getting my new monitors to work on ubuntu 10.04 , i have spent several days at it so far no luck .
on a fresh instal of ubuntu 10.04 it was unable to detect them and they are running at 800x600 , yuck ! , i need 1920x1080 i have been trying for days but not getting anywhere.
when i put into terminal xrandr --output VGA1 --auto i get vga1 not found also tryed vga2 as my graphics card is dual head matrox g450 ,i would be happy just to get one running at the correct resolution at least it would be a start . could someone help please.Thanks Andrew

thanks for the link , however not a lot here i haven't seen before , still need some major help getting this working
