monitor resolution problem

I'm sorry if this seems a little silly, but I am an (almost) complete linux newb. I just installed the new "natty" 11.04 (x86) distro from Ubuntu to dual boot with win7.

I noticed that it defaulted to a lower resolution for my monitor (1024:768. I can't find a higher resolution in System Settings->Monitors. Is there a way to "add" a new resolution to Ubuntu?

Thank You in advance
~~Alec

Post the output of the "xrandr" command.

okay, here's what I get from xrandr:

What kind of video card do you have? If you don't know, post the output of this command:

Code:

lspci | grep VGA

it recognizes
Quote:

VGA compatible controller: InnoTek Systemberatung GmbH VirtualBox Graphics Adapter
... which i guess makes sense because I decided i'd much rather use a VM rather than dualboot..

*actual* graphics is ATI Radeon 3000 came installed with computer

I don't think that VirtualBox can necessarily support your monitor's native resolution.

It would be best for someone that knows more about this to reply.

To get higher resolutions and some neat extra features install the Virtualbox Guest Additions. You can learn how to do that in the Virtualbox manual.
