Not 100% sure about mandrake, but there's probably an option for that in mandrake control center. The old-fashioned (old in linux means console) way is to open an terminal window (DOS promptish thing), type 'su' and the root password when prompted (this changes you to root if you aren't already...you shouldn't use root anyway), then type 'xf86cfg -textmode'
That should bring you to the xfree86 setup screen, and you can alter your settings there. It helps to have your monitor refresh rates handy, then you can enter the custom values for your screen. Then, kill your x-windows if you know how (if not, learn the 'ps' command, and the 'kill' command) then restart X, and if you don't know how yet, you can also just reboot. If you set something wrong, and your screen goes haywire, hit ctrl-alt-backspace to stop X from trying to load. Then ask here again, if you have a computer (or windows on another partition) to ask from. |
so far i cant tell.... i cant get into linux because of somthing to do with the ipchains..... i cant get a connection between the two computers any more.... i downloaded a progam that makes using Windows XP as a router very easy....but theres a catch.... its designed that it just asumes that the other computers's are winbased systems.... so its looking for the dhcp ip setup... its letting windows set things up for me.... so i can do any thing......i am working on it as i type this reply....... oh...no....it got to the part where it said "checking foward ipchain compatably" or somthing...so i got board and pressed enter.... and i got the defult "old" console.... but no kde..... i am kinda stuck..... i need massive help here.... i tryed loggin out... and it refreshed itself....
i am trying now to log in as root.... ok it dident ask me for my password.... now i am at [root@localhost root]# .... the command prompt right???..... i dont know the commands to log into kde... i'll try somthing noob like typing in "KDE" ... lol here goes nothing.....lol... no go... damn....restart x server??.. nothing..... ok now i freaking out!!!!!! AAAAAAHHHHHH i broke it... =( ...... need help badly!!!! Please!! i hope you get this...... |
I've got the same problem in Redhat 9. I tried what Scott R said. It says: "bash: xf86cfg: command not found"
I also tried it with "./xf86cfg -textmode" and it told me "No such file or directory" This refresh rate is killing my eyes and forcing me to use my Windows partition more than I would like. Went back, and found the file, I'm not sure what to change though. I was looking at the setup menu for my monitor, and it says the refresh rates are: Horizontal: 77.9 Vertical: 85.4 ...but I've got this horible flickering which is more noticeable when I've got a white/light colored window open. |
